Some children are born with lip or tongue-ties that can cause gas and fussiness, inhibit weight gain, and lead to a painful experience while breastfeeding. These problems can also detract from a child’s appearance and will not get better on their own. Luckily, many pediatric dentists are specially trained to treat these problems. Here’s what you should know about lip and tongue-ties as well as how these issues can be treated.
Why Is It Important to Treat Lip and Tongue-Ties?
Untreated tongue-ties can cause problems in infancy, childhood, and adults. Lip and tongue-ties happen when the tissue attaching the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the lip to the gum is too thick or short to allow for a full range of motion. This tissue will not stretch out and lengthen with use over the years, meaning that this can cause difficulties with eating and speaking well into adulthood. While some might suggest that you wait for your child to let your child tear their tongue or lip free during an eventual fall, this can be painful and is not sufficiently likely to happen.
How Can Lip or Tongue-Ties Be Treated?
Treating lip or tongue-ties involves a quick, painless, and easy procedure. The dentist uses a special surgical laser to cut through the excessive tissue that restricts the tongue or lip’s movement. The laser minimizes discomfort and eliminates bleeding, and breastfeeding can be resumed immediately after the procedure.
How Can I Tell if My Baby Has a Lip or Tongue-Tie?
A baby with a lip or tongue-tie may exhibit a variety of symptoms such as:
- Gagging or choking on food
- Spitting up
- Speech delay
- Fussiness
- The baby is frustrated or fatigued at the breast or bottle
- The baby is a restless sleeper
While lip and tongue-ties can cause significant problems for a child, they can be easily and safely treated by a qualified pediatric dentist. Consulting with your child’s dentist can determine if your child needs treatment for one of these issues.
